The Dell Port Sunlight bridge

The Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight, Wirral

Royal Liverpool Golf Club is positioned between Hoylake & West Kirby on the North West corner of the Wirral Peninsula. Wirral is a haven of award winning coast, countryside, wildlife, culture, art, theatre and heritage. It is nestled between the River Mersey and the River Dee overlooked by the Welsh Hills on one side and the historic Liverpool skyline on the other. Wirral is perfectly placed for a short golfing break with plenty of other things to do while you are in the area. There are scenic walks and cycle routes, picturesque villages with a range of accommodation, beautiful parks and garden villages, and fantastic places to eat to suit a wide range of tastes.

Wirral is a great place to base your golf trip, as part of ‘England’s Golf Coast’, we have two other Open Venues, Royal Birkdale and Royal Lytham & St.Annes within 90 mins drive. Within one hour we have a number of top Open qualifying courses including Hillside, West Lancs and Southport & Ainsdale. In Wirral alone we have 15 golf courses. Wallasey ‘The Home of Stableford’ is another Open qualifying venue which is a fantastic links course and a great test of golf. We also have Caldy Golf Club, the host of the Women’s Open final qualifying and is just along the coast from Hoylake.

Within the Hoylake & West Kirby area there is a wide range of accommodation to suit all budgets including a newly refurbished 56-room Hotel in Kings Gap just a 9 iron from our practise ground and a traditional Bed & Breakfast overlooking the 17th green. The area is also well served in terms of restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, all within walking distance of the club. To find out more about the local accommodation, take a look at the Visit Wirral Accommodation Booking Tool on this page.

The links coastline is a hub for wildlife enthusiasts with the birdlife (including Oystercatchers, Curlew & Redshank) attracting people from all over the UK. Hilbre Island, which offers a stunning backdrop to holes 9-12, is a beautiful nature reserve with Grey Seals & Bottlenose Dolphins regularly spotted. Royal Liverpool is not the only international sporting venue in the area. The 2011 European Sand Yachting Championships were held on Hoylake beach and the Marine Lake at West Kirby is one of the largest coastal marine lakes in Europe and plays host to major watersports events. Don’t forget to look out for the amazing sunsets around the coastline!

With Liverpool just a ‘Ferry across the Mersey’ away and experiencing something of a renaissance, a host of world class entertainment, cultural and sporting highlights are easily accessible within 30 mins. Also close by is the Roman City of Chester offering close to two thousand years of fascinating history and the premier Zoo in the UK. However, the rest of Wirral also has a huge amount to offer, with exciting events & festivals happening all year round. Did you know that Central Park in New York was inspired by our very own Birkenhead Park? In addition Port Sunlight is a stunning architectural example of a Garden Village, built by William Hesketh Lever in 1888 for the Lever’s factory workers. A visit to the stunning Lady Lever Art Gallery is very worthwhile. Should you choose to catch the oldest ferry service in Europe over to Liverpool, be sure to check out the award-winning U-boat Story at Woodside Ferry port.

The future for Wirral looks bright too, with Wirral Waters, the largest regeneration project in the UK aiming to create a cityscape to overlook Liverpool. The first part of this gets underway soon with the creation of the International Trade Centre that will allow up to 1,000 companies primarily from China, India & South Korea to exhibit, sell, assemble and distribute their goods into the UK, Irish and European markets.
